Honoring History, Inspiring the Future

I am writing to request your support for the Fourth Annual Abolition Walk, which will take place on October 11th in Canastota, NY. This event serves as a powerful commemoration of the brave abolitionists of Central New York who risked everything to turn the tide against slavery in America during the mid-19th century. Their courage and actions, much like the challenges we face as a nation today, remind us of the transformative power of hope and unity.

Historical Significance

The Abolition Road Walk reenacts a dramatic incident from 1835. During this time, abolitionists attempted to form the New York State Anti-Slavery Society in Utica, only to be attacked by a violent mob. Undeterred, these valiant individuals rode a canal lumber barge through the night to Canastota. From there, they embarked on a steep 9-mile journey on foot to Peterboro, singing freedom songs along the way. Their resilience and determination marked a pivotal moment in the abolitionist movement, one that deserves wider recognition and commemoration.

Our Vision

Our goal for this year’s event is to honor these unsung heroes while inspiring future generations. We aim to shed light on this largely overlooked chapter in American history and make it a source of pride for freedom-loving people everywhere. Ultimately, we envision a televised event featuring 1,000 participants, drawing attention to this dramatic local history and celebrating the enduring fight for justice and equality.
